Indonesia, Malaysia to increase security maintenance in border


The militaries of Indonesia and Malaysia have agreed to expand cooperation and increase border security maintenance.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) Commander Admiral Agus Suhartono and Malaysian Army Chief General Tan Sri Dato` Sri Zulkifeli bin Mohd Zin here on Tuesday.

Both hope to continue and enhance cooperation between the two armed forces in all fields, especially about securing the borders, both land and sea.


The TNI chief said the meeting of the commanders of the two armed forces was a momentum meaningful and beneficial for both countries in their participation to materialize the ASEAN region on the basis of a comprehensive partnership, spirit and solidarity.

"It will have impact on realization, increasing and improving relations and cooperation between Malaysia and Indonesia, particularly the Armed Forces of the two countries," TNI Commander Agus Suhartono said.

Agus said he hoped the close and good relationship between the two militaries which have been established will build a solid foundation for expansion of more concrete cooperation.

"Not only for the two armed forces, but also for the expansion and increased interaction and cooperation among the armies, navies and air forces of both sides," the TNI commander said.

The defense communities and armed forces of the two nations have routinely organized General Border Committee (GBC) Malindo meetings since 1972.

The two armed forces even specifically organized High Level Committee (HLC) Malindo meeting since 2006, besides other useful activities between the two countries` armed forces.

In a separate place, presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had asked Malaysia to continue developing military cooperation agreement that benefits both countries and contribute to regional security.

Pasha made the statement to a press conference at the Presidential Office on Tuesday after President Yudhoyono received a courtesy call by Malaysian Army Commander General Tan Sri Datuk Sri Mohd Zulkifli Zein on Tuesday.
